He received his licence to practise medicine from the University of Tübingen in January 2003. In June 2011, he qualified as a professor (venia legendi in paediatrics) and became a faculty member and private lecturer at the University of Tübingen. Research and contributions
FeverApp
Fever: Inspired by the fact that most animals produce fever and survive better when the fever is supported with warmth rather than suppressed, and by the fact that integrative and anthroposophic doctors prescribe far fewer antibiotics and antibiotics with better patient satisfaction and outcomes, Martin examined all guidelines on fever worldwide and then initiated a national guideline for Germany, which he developed on behalf of the German Society for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine with 13 professional associations and a patient organisation, funded by the Innovation Fund of the Joint Federal Committee. At the same time, with €2 million in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, he developed the FeverApp Register and the FeverApp with Prof. Dr. Ekkehart Jenetzky, which won first prize for the most innovative register in Germany in 2023. He then received €2.6 million from the Innovation Fund of the Joint Federal Committee for the FitFürFieber project.
Digitalisation
Together with Dr Silke Schwarz, Martin initiated the National AWMF Guideline on the Prevention of Dysregulated Screen Use in Children and Adolescents on behalf of the German Society for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and with 11 professional associations and organisations. At the same time, they initiated a series of action research projects to reduce children's screen time, such as www.medienfasten.org, www.mediafasting.org, www.bildschirmfrei-bis-3.de; www.blikk3.de, or ‘Bildschirmfrei – Sei dabei!’ (Screen-free – Join in!), which is funded with £3.7 million from the Innovation Fund of the Joint Education Committee.
In addition, Martin, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, investigated the social credit system in the People's Republic of China and scoring in the West (SCHUFA et al.) to promote European-Chinese cooperation in the sub-project. ‘Intercultural analysis of sources on science and health’
Medicine from Soil to Soul – One Health
- Together with Dr Benjamin Busse, Martin received funding from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the PlantaMedia® project – an internet database that pools knowledge on the location and effectiveness of medicinal plants.
- Medical-Agricultural Academic Year at Dottenfelder Hof: Together with Martin von Mackensen, Martin inaugurated an academic year in which doctors, medical students and people from the health sector study biodynamic agriculture and health together with people from the agricultural sector for a whole year, with the option of graduating as preventologists.
- Piglet study: Together with Dr. Petra Weiermayer, Martin received millions in funding for the development and implementation of studies on reducing the use of antibiotics through integrative approaches in veterinary medicine.
- Martin and his team are also researching Taiji and eurythmy as part of the ENTAIER multicentre study on the effectiveness of Taiji and eurythmy as fall prevention in old age.
- In ‘On the Earth We Want to Live’ (2023), Martin and paediatrician Georg Soldner describe sustainable, planet-friendly medicine.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Martin wrote scientific publications that he had reviewed by the boards of the DGKJ and members of STIKO, and on this basis advocated a scientific approach to coronavirus vaccination, and in particular caution regarding recommendations for children until reliable data is available.
Awards
Martin has received several awards for his research, including the Jürgen Bierich Prize from the German Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology (2006 and 2009 for the best clinical research work). Other honours include the Judith Esser Mittag Prize from the German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology (2004), the Holzschuh Prize for Complementary Medicine, several poster prizes and first prize for the most innovative registry in Germany (FeverApp Registry, 2023). He was a recipient of the Novo Nordisk Fellowship of the German Society of Endocrinology (2004).

Screens, artificial intelligence and robotics – a lecture by David Martin | 2026

And in view of this development, as a paediatrician first and foremost, but also simply as a human being, I ask myself what we need to do now for our children to ensure that in 20, 30, 40 years' time we don't have to say to ourselves that we missed something. […]
And so I ask myself, where do I have a slight feeling today that something is wrong, which perhaps the next generations will perceive as a glaring problem? And so I began to look into digitalisation, and I will talk a little bit about that later.
